The Flight Plan
0.0 - 1.2 mi
From the Chaparral Parking Area head towards the Juniper Canyon Trail. There are a series of trails leaving the parking lot, but if you get turned around, put your back to the parking lot entrance and go right.
The Juniper Canyon Trail will climb gradually for approximately 0.75mi before reaching a series of switchbacks. Continue up the switchbacks for another 0.45mi until you reach a fork in the trail.
1.2 - 1.7 mi
At the fork, turn left onto the Tunnel Trail. Pass through the man-made tunnel. Continue up another series of switchbacks for approximately 0.5 mi until the trail intersects with the High Peaks Trail.
1.2 - 2.3 mi
At the intersection with the High Peaks trail, turn right. Although relatively flat, this section of the trail is not without its own set of obstacles, including a rock staircase. Don't expect to be moving quickly, so take some time to admire the views!
2.3 - 4.1 mi
At the 2.3 mi mark (near the bathroom!), the trail reconnects with the Juniper Canyon Trail. Turn right onto the Juniper Canyon Trail and follow it back down to the parking lot.
Tips
Avoid peak weekend hours. The trail can get crowded, especially along the High Peaks section and parking may be limited.
Prep for sun exposure and no available water. The trail does not offer much shade and can get hot.
Check for heat-related closures in the summer.
Bring binoculars. Pinnacles is home to California Condors, which can be spotted in the park year-round if you're lucky. Most likely, you'll see a lot of Turkey Vultures. (identification guide)
